The Atlantis II ObjectivesThe Atlantis II project seeks to bring together society and the ocean. Oceans make up more then 70% of the world's surface, but we know far too little about them. Atlantis II is a research station in one of the planet's most recently discovered ecosystems: abyssal hydrothermal vent fields. Abyssal hydrothermal vent fields are spots on the ocean floor where the crust is unusually thin, causing volcanic activity which sustains a wide variety of life. Atlantis II will expand the breadth of human knowledge. Atlantis II serves a special role in changing the interaction between mankind and the environment. Through the research conducted on the main platform, Atlantis II will help to gain a better understand of the environmental impact of mankind's actions such as deep see dumping and toxicity spreading. Our parents gave us the gift of this world and it is our responsibilities to make sure that we can also give this gift to our children. Atlantis II is a major player in making sure this dream comes true. To read about the abyssal environment visit the environment section. Atlantis II also has many engineering objectives. The difficulties of the project only add to the spirit of cooperation amongst the staff. The depth of the main platform creates a set of unique challenges for the project. By addressing these problems, hopefully technology and techniques will evolve that are applicable to surface life. To see more information on the engineering problems encountered due to the environment, visit Engineering Issues. For information on health concerns due to the environment, visit Health and Safety. Research into areas like pressure manufacturing will aid in surface industries. The project is not limited to the scope of the vent system, but rather seeks the lessons of an undiscovered frontier. |
