SIVAM(and other things like it): Do We Care?

There has been a lot of dicussion in class recently on whether or not we care about SIVAM. Unfortunately, we do. Not a whole lot, but some. First, here's some info on SIVAM.

According to the Raytheon webpage, SIVAM will help Brazil deal with problems such as:

  • illegal gold mining
  • deforestation
  • drug production and smuggling
  • land conflicts

Nowhere in this list is there any mention about protective the wildlife of the Amazon rainforest. And, although it does look like some of the equipment SIVAM is using could be helpful for monitoring animals, its also largely a brand new way of doing things. They will want some sort of ground confirmation, at least originally, which leaves the fauna group in about the same position they were before. We're not really doing a whole lot to save the rainforest; we're showing that the rainforest needs saving through the monitoring methods we have developed. Our goal as a group is to be able to monitor the fauna in order to reinforce data found by other groups. Once a problem is detected, the solutions to those problems can then be implemented.
