Team meeting:
- 1½ weeks until end of research
- Ruchi - got data for many oil wells - percentage of money that goes to
each well
- Oil Companies: Exxon, Texaco, Chevron, Shell, Mobile
- Consumer prices independent of ANWR
- U.S. - 4% of world reserves
- Does Technology actually help environment?
- Related to politics group: What if the government sponsors
nature-friendly companies?
- Need to rank environment in order to figure out costs
- Everyone make sure your website is working so that research can be put
into the team webpage
- Need to contact actuaries, lawyers, environmentalists, and oil companies
- Further Research:
- Ruchi - more oil well estimates
- Jaime - Why do estimates vary so much?
- Liz - Look into jobs created/lost/etc.
- Zheng - Transportation methods/costs
- Alex - contacting all those people mentioned above
Meeting with Alumni Mentors (7pm, Terrascope room):
- Met with Jeremy and Nina
- EPA data - shows costs of wildlife
- Plenty of case studies online
- Oil consumer prices will no change due to ANWR
- US imports not affected
- Oil locations unproven
- Poll of people? find one online that's already been done
- "Environmental economics" - consult MIT faculty, econ.
department
- Don't look into alternative energy sources
- Need research from other teams
- Evaluate utility of sources
- Decision analysis: attribute probability to outcomes, use for possible
scientific discovery?
- Be clear on objective
- Preservation = - Extraction
- Document things you considered and then dismissed
- Other resources: tourism?
- Start with simplest formula, then complicate things
- Create model, then research as per that model
- Email alumni mentors - they have desk jobs and would prefer email from
us than from clients
