Team Presentations

Team 1

  • Need to know production strategy from team e
  • Oil extracted from ANWR on market in 7-12 years

Team e

  • Onshore/offshore considerations
  • Seismic vibration of sea bottom
  • Explore getting oil out of ground - decide on possibility of one small footprint
  • Look into offshore, directional drilling
  • Transportation - oil, people and communications
  • Kip: objective is to design most environmentally friendly strategy, not the most economic
  • Harvard talk: eskimos DO NOT favor offshore drilling
  • Kip: Teamwork is good

Team 4

  • Look at pre-human condition of ANWR
  • Difficult to make connections between data and research
  • Need to coordinate with other groups
  • Liz: can you quanitfy environmental impact? No, since it's hard....

Team 5

  • Characterize baseline of ecosystem
  • Regional Climate: last three decades - significant global warming, more vegitation, more hebivores
  • Need "Macro-view"
  • Goal: Integrate with other teams

Team 6

  • Air, water and land migratory species
  • Birds: 150 species migrate, some are relatively unaffected by oil, but others nutrition is hurt
  • Critical time period: August - early September, some species breed exclusively during this time
  • Land: takes months for bears to give birth (I think they meant to reproduce in general), porcupine caribou abundant in 1002 area
  • Water: 14 fresh water, 27 marine water, plus other mammals
  • Alex: Can you quantify damage to species
  • Kris: Right now we don't have quantity, we should implement tagging observation system
  • Kip: Sometimes data not available, make part of program to determine quantification, consider where big gaps of knowledge are, make estimates, and then fill those gaps

Team 7

  • Molasses important
  • Plant vegetation to re-colonize, vegetate land quickly (4-6 months)
  • Some species hunted to extinction in area before 20th century, now being re-introduced
  • Global warming » current flow » some areas get more snowfall » longer winters!
  • Team 10: Experts » shorter winter » shorter drilling system
  • Kip: Know your sources, Team 7 should be expelled, should admit data doesn't exist

Team 8

  • Costs and benefits of oil production/preservation of ANWR
  • This Wednesday will meet with Team 10 in later part of class time in Terrascope room
