ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY

Summary:  The EPA, in its current form, was established in 1970.  The EPA has many purposes.  Its main purpose is to protect the environment, including lands designated as protected by the government.  To protect these areas effectively the EPA is always conducting research to fulfill their duties as well as possible.

Purpose:  Since the EPA is charged with protecting wilderness/refuge lands a little background research was in line.

Relevance:  There isn't much direct application of this research to Mission.  It is helpful, though, to know what the EPA is and where to find more information if necessary.

-In 1970 the EPA was reorganized, under Reorganization Plan 3 of 1970, and took on new responsibilities, such as:  "a variety of research, monitoring, standard setting, and enforcement activities related to pollution abatement and control to provide for the treatment of the environment as a single interrelated system."
-"EPA reinforces efforts among other Federal agencies with respect to the impact of their operations on the environment."
