Occupation: Capital Planning and Development
MIT year: 2003
Education: Masters
My current work is to provide quantitative and written analysis
and strategic advice on policy development and institutional planning
as it relates to the physical development of Harvard University's
Cambridge campus. Because I am the only person on this team with
a business and policy background (I work with architects and urban
designers), I am often taking what has been done and presenting
it in a whole new way for senior administrators and the public.
The planning issues are complex (projecting 10 to 20 years into
the future), as well as sensitive to the community in and around
the University. I hope to contribute real-life experience from
other large and complex physical development projects that are
highly scrutinized both in the design and capital expenditure
at least by the local and regional community, but are also emulated
by national observers. I would be happy to provide information
resources or co-mentor with another alumnus, combining skills
for greater value to the students. I have a MBA from Sloan, and
was a Sloan Fellow. I also have a Master in Public Administration
from Harvard University s Kennedy School of Government. I have
been working for 16 years, and currently live and work in Harvard
Square.

From 1979 to 1986, I was involved in property tax appraisal and
valuation. I was Assistant Assessor for the City of Boston, and
I am very familiar with development economics and property valuation.
One of the key problems that will need to be researched in this
case is the value of property and the types of property that must
be taken to save what can be saved in New Orleans.
I have extensive IT experience -- both as a CIO and a CTO. I also
have experience in construction -- particularly residential construction.

and lived in Michigan until I left for MIT. As an undergraduate,
I was elected to a variety of student leadership positions including
Senator for the Undergraduate Association, President of Phi Kappa
Sigma, and President of the Interfraternity Council. While there,
I helped coordinate a number of community service events including:
"Loud and Local," the Boston Back Bay Alley Rally, and
the Fraternity Assisted Move-In. I graduated from MIT in 2005
with a S.B. in Brain and Cognitive Sciences. I went on to graduate
school at Boston University, where I have recently graduated (2006)
with an M.A. in Medical Sciences and a focus on Mental Health
Counseling. While there and since graduation, I have worked for
the Alzheimer's Disease Center on two projects: one concerning
Driving and Dementia, and the other on the relationship between
smoking and Alzheimer's. In April, I joined Team Continuum, a
nonprofit group motivated to improve cancer patient care. This
commitment entails raising at least $2,500 for the team and running
the New York City Marathon in November (I have currently raised
over $2,300). I also teach all sections of the MCAT for the Cambridge
Kaplan Center and I am currently applying to medical school.

SDM '03 (graduated 04 with an MS in Engineering and Management),
Engineering Systems Division. Undergrad in Physics, Peace Corps
Kenya 1989 - 1991 teaching secondary math & science, 3 years
graduate school in Physical Oceanography, 7 years as a software
architect, 1 year as a systems architect, long trips to France,
Prague, Chile, Tonga, Micronesia and Indonesia, Volunteer experience
with Horizon's Initiative as a playspace volunteer, Cascade Bicycle
Club in many roles, and much more.
Phone or email contact is great, and I'm often in Cambridge.
Ion Freeman is an experienced solver of complex problems. Born
in Boston in 1968 while his father was a visiting professor in
Chemical Engineering at MIT (hence the name), he grew up in Darien,
CT, a bedroom community for Manhattan. After completing his undergraduate
studies in Physics with a Music Theory Minor at Rutgers Camden,
Ion spent the summer of 1989 in San Francisco before spending
two years teaching high school in Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer.
He then moved from complex social problems to complex geophysical
problems, studying tropical instability waves at the University
of Washington from 1992 - 1995. Realizing that the problems were
actually enviropolitical, he decided to go into politics, but
was derailed by a car accident, and spent the following seven
years pursuing a career as a software architect. Peaking at that,
he returned to MIT for a Master's in Engineering and Management,
and spent a year transforming the business processes of Fortune
50 Companies. Which brings us, more or less, to now.

1: Todd Harland-White todd @alum.mit.edu
Todd Harland-White's career since MIT (XIII-C, '76) has involved
designing and building manned and unmanned systems operating in
the deep sea for Northrop Grumman Oceanic Systems, where he is now
Chief Architect. Projects have included design of deepsea research
submersibles and mini-subs, participation in teams designing new
submarine and surface ship classes, developing underwater robotic
systems, and working with optical and acoustic sensors and sensor
networks for probing and mapping the underwater space. All of these
efforts have been highly inter-disciplinary not only in the breadth
of technical issues but also in the politics and budgeting required
to initiate and complete the projects - as is typical of most real
problems.
Northrop Grumman's Gulf shipyards suffered serious damage in
the flooding and are only now returning to something resembling
normality. On the plus side, Todd's company has developed improved
expertise in sensor systems placed within the environment and
operated from remote locations - underwater, airborne, or even
in space - that may be of assistance in the development of Mission
2009 designs to monitor the status of the protection systems necessary
for a risen N'awlinz.
This is Todd's sixth tour of duty as a 12.000 mentor, having
served for Missions 2005 through 2009. Todd also serves as an
MIT Educational Counselor possibly responsible for some of you
being there at MIT to begin with!
Todd has managed to visit one or two of the classes, but usually
he will have to do everything long distance from Annapolis MD
via email and website review.

Topics of interest: Infant and maternal health during a natural
or man-made disaster. I would be interested in helping a group
that wants to look into the urgent medical needs of mothers and
infants as New Orleans is re-built
For the past three years I've been working on the design of infant
incubators for preemies born into crises - be it natural or man-made.
Electricity is one of the first luxuries to be lost during such
a crisis, and often preemies in need of incubators will die during
these power outages. I've been focusing on designing incubators
that use other modes of power, and therefore will still remain
functional.

In addition to a B.S. in Physics and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering
with a concentration on "systems", I grew up in Omaha,
Nebraska and experienced flooding of the Missouri River and the
rivers in western Iowa after the Corp of Engineers "fixed"
them by straightening them before 1950. I was too young to actually
fill and pile sandbags, but, later I worked in a industrial plant
that was "sacrificial" in the sense that it was on the
river side of the levy and was expected to be flooded when a flood
occurred.
I have worked on "systems" including hydraulics, heavy
electrical equipment, communications, and computers as well as
procedural sytems.
I have some informal training in structures and earth moving
My background is B.S. (MIT '63) in physics and M.S. (MIT '69) in
Electrical Engineering (and Computer Science) with emphasis on "systems".
I have worked in water supply systems, Radar systems, computer systems,
data communications systems, telecommunications systems, among others.
I have also maintained an interest in weather, sewage systems, environmentally
friendly designs, industrial control systems, linguistics, etc.
etc. My "thing" is applying many disciplines to the solution of
problems. I am currently semi-retired (with occasional consulting
business). I can usually get to Cambridge and attend the classes
and lectures which makes for a good interaction with the students.
I am also available via e-mail, telephone, etc. |

I am a retired software executive. My professional career has
ranged from an information retrieval research project in the Electronics
Systems Lab at MIT, to advanced development of online financial
systems, to computer aided design of VLSI chips and computer systems,
to nonlinear video editing systems, to telemedicine (plus a few
more stops along the way). I received an SM in Course 6 in 1970
and also attended advanced management programs at Stanford and
INSEAD. For the past two years I've had the pleasure of participating
in Mission 2008 and 2009.
I've become very interested in challenges and opportunities that
global warming will present to the population of earth. It seems
to me that this is the greatest opportunity for global unity ever.
If we're forced to come together to deal with a real threat to
all of humankind, it just may force us to find a way to live together
in peace. Now, wouldn't that be nice byproduct of survival. |

6: Government Involvement: Dr. Jorge Phillips jp @alum.MIT.EDU
919-676-1144 MIT Degree: B.Sc VI-3 (Computer Science) ‘72
Aside from his MIT degree, Jorge holds M.Sc. (Computer Science
- Artificial Intelligence), M.Sc. (EE – Computer Systems)
and Ph.D in EE & CS (Artificial Intelligence and Management)
degrees from Stanford University. He has had a lifelong interest
(since his MIT years) in complex social systems, appropriate technology,
politics and policy making, and social development especially
in the context of less developed nations and environments. A successful
entrepreneur, he has been involved in management consulting, technology
policy making and the software industry for over 25 years as a
management consultant at the executive management level, in CxO
and investor roles of companies in Silicon Valley, Research Triangle,
Georgia and abroad, and in Cabinet level and diplomatic positions
in Colombia and Europe. Dr. Phillips has also had extensive academic
and research experience in Latin America, US and Europe, and holds
software patents in USA, Japan and Europe. In the past, his political
interests led him to become a Secretary to the President of Colombia
from 1984 to 1987, charged with the informatization of the country
with a large investment portfolio of multi-million dollar projects
in many technology fronts. From this position he conceived and
led a pioneer connectivity project creating public computer access
centers throughout all of Colombia to provide democratic access
to information and knowledge to all citizens. This project has
been the model for the Connectivity Agendas being implemented
since 2000 by cabinet-level programs in a number of countries
around the world. Later, as President of the Intergovernmental
Bureau of Informatics and Vice-President of the World Commission
on Transborder Data Flow both based in Roma, Italy, Dr. Phillips
oversaw the creation, funding and execution of a large number
of multimillion dollar investment projects in information technology
for development in Africa, Asia and the Americas, and information
technology policy making efforts in those countries. He is a renowned
international management consultant in ICT (past clients span
from Citibank, Olivetti, Apple Computer, ENI, and Renault to Telecom,
IADB and others), and has been advisor over the past decade in
policy making for Latin-American and Caribbean Presidents and
cabinet-level officials in the areas of ICT policy formation,
regulation and promotion. He is a founding member of the Children's
Museum in Bogotá, Colombia and of the International Center
of Physics in Colombia, correspondent to the International Center
of Physics in Trieste, Italy. Dr. Phillips is a member of Eta
Kappa Nu and Sigma Xi (inducted to both as an undergraduate at
MIT). He currently lives in the Research Triangle area in North
Carolina, where he is involved in high tech startups, in the Council
for Entrepreneurial Development and other technology efforts.
Statement
I can contribute as a mentor to 12.000 students in many ways:
· Experience in developing new technologies that address
actual real-life problems.
· Experience as a Cabinet level official during a major
disaster. I was in office as Secretary to the President of Colombia
when the Armero disaster occurred (leaving over 20,000 people
dead in a matter of minutes due to a volcanic eruption in the
Nevado del Ruiz mountain that caused a 90 feet high ash mudslide
that buried the whole city). From my office I witnessed first
hand the disaster management and rescue efforts and later the
relocation and reconstruction of the city, including relocation
of survivors and their reinsertion of people into other communities,
etc.
· Experience in politics at the highest level in a country
· Technological experience as an entrepreneur in computer
and communication technology
· Experience in the complexity of catalyzing effective
action in a government structure
and getting government and international funding for complex projects,
etc.
· My deep interest in problem solving in undefined and
ambiguous decision spaces, i.e. reducing complex situations to
solvable components to find and integrate solutions.
Other Comments
When a government is hit by a disaster, say Katrina in the US
or Armero 20 years ago in Colombia, the government and the country
behave almost like a living being in shock. I always asked myself
what kind of organizational structure in the Colombian government
could have hastened and improved government response during Armero,
and more importantly what kind of organization and structure (i.e.
what kind of social and technological monitoring and control system)
could have been created to speed up the reconstruction, and to
ensure that any such disaster could be dealt with efficiently
in the future. I find this educational experiment fascinating,
because as an MIT graduate I know for a fact that one is prepared
for extreme and ultimate problem solving. Yet as an MIT graduate
that has been a few years in the real world, I also know that,
at least in my time, little did we learn at MIT about how the
real world works. We learned a lot about how well it could be
made to work through science and technology, but there was much
more involved in making the "could" a reality! Problem
solving in the real world, is problem solving in extremely complex
and ambiguous situations, where social, political, and financial
constraints define solution viability, and where optimal does
not have the analytic meaning it has in the classroom.

4: Levee construction and design: Randolph Scott Punter
Scotty @alum.mit.edu 617-314-3631
Occupation: Energy Efficiency Engineer
MIT year: 2004
Education: Bachelors
My areas of interest lie in the Architectural Sciences. I've had
much exposure to design (taking MIT studios), construction (working
as construction administrator in an architecture firm), Energy
engineering in buildings (my current job as an energy efficiency
enigineer), and other building technologies I learned as a BT
major at MIT. I would say that energy efficiency and architectural
engineering would be the best skill I can lend to the team. I
have a real keen sense on how to read plans/blue prints, and extensive
understanding of structural and mechanical systems.
At MIT, I began my career in architecture design, but merged into
the Building Technology program, where I used both my engineering
and design skills. I took classes in Thermodynamics in Buildings,
Structural Mechanics, Civil engineering; Computer aided modeling
as well as studio. My 1-year undergraduate research project involved
both the Electrical Engineering and the Architecture department
as I was helping to design a minimally intrusive way to monitor
airflow patterns in buildings using ozone as a trace. The project
developed my skills in EE as well as fluid dynamics. Other activities
in HS includes one term residing as a Undergraduate Association
Senator, member of the freshmen heavyweight crew team, and membership
in Phi Kappa Sigma international fraternity- in which I served
as the secretary, and social chairman for 2 years. My college
jobs include working a UROP for the nuclear engineering school,
and tutoring/mentoring at MATCH high school (Boston, MA) for 2
school years.
After graduation, I had a few career assignments associated with
my degree in architecture. I was interned at the MIT facilities
department where I did various work with campus planning. My next
job was at the Stubbins Associates architecture firm in Cambridge
MA, where I did construction administration for the Marriott Hotel
being built in South Boston. My current job is with Demand Management
Institute (Newton, MA) as an energy efficiency engineer. My job
involves working with the utility companies to help reduce building
energy consumption by the buildings mechanical systems by implementing
energy efficient equipment. The assignments I have include modeling
a buildings system and shell in computer software, as well as
visiting sites in the New England area to do metering of their
equipment. Right now I am also serving as the National HQ liaison
to my fraternity. This is an alumni role.
About my mentoring: I have been mentoring/tutoring younger students
since High school. In high school I spent 2 years helping an underclassman
with calculus and trigonometry. In my later high school years,
I tutored a grade school student in english and math. In college,
I spent two years (two summers and 2 school years) tutoring and
mentoring at the MATCH high school. The program was geared at
helping students pass the MCAS exam. The school also offered a
technology mentoring program that I participated in. Right now
I am the chapter advisor for my undergraduate fraternity at MIT.
My duties are to be a liason between the undergrads and older
alumni who own the house, as well as the go to guy for the national
headquarters. I have been out of college and working for 1 year.
My favorite activities involve trumpet playing, computer modeling
of buildings, tinkering around with electronics, drawing, and
solid modeling.
