Problem Set 1 Computing Problems

     TRY THE COMPUTING PROBLEMS EARLY!

In 18.06 we invite you to use any computer language you like.  We are encouraging

the use of Julia, a new exciting technical computing language which is remarkably fast on real world problems. Please take a look at an html version of HelloWorld.html (not live, just for viewing) which is an introductory notebook that will get you started.
The problem set itself that we are asking you to do and turn in (as paper) is ps1c.pdf . For those trying out Julia. It will become particularly easy for you. Much of the code will already be there. Note: juliabox.org may be unavailable before Monday morning, September 8, but give it a shot. At 3:53pm eastern Sunday afternoon September 7, it seems to be working but we got overwhelmed by unexpected pupularity. Please let us know your experience. Don't be shy. Email us: julia-box@googlegroups.com , we want to hear from 18.06. Okay to write -- everything worked. We're cool. Or nothing worked, what gives?

Prof. Steve Johnson is holding a Julia session on Tuesday, September 9

from 5:30pm to 7:30pm in room 32-155.   Come for the tour and bring any questions.

The easiest way to do the problems is to log in to JuliaBox.org with your Gmail account.   The problem set notebooks are here in a zip file which can be downloaded. The ipynb files can be dragged right into ijulia on the juliabox. (Raw notebook files: HelloWorld.ipynb MatrixPowers.ipynb ) If you want to download Julia on your own computer, see download Julia  and set up IJulia, and grab the notebooks. This can be a bit trickier.  Come on Monday if you get stuck. TRY THE COMPUTING PROBLEMS EARLY!

We recommend that  you try this early.  (Did we say that yet?) Many of you will have no trouble, the system has been used for a while, but we know and expect that  issues can occassionally arise.  If you have any trouble at all, please email  1806-julia-help@googlegroups.com and we will try to help you very quickly.
