A commonly used telegraph machine is concisted of a straight key. The key is a simple bar with a knob on top and a contact underneath. When the bar is pressed down to the spring tension, it completes a circuit. The straight key also has a shorting bar that closes the electrical circuit when the players are not using the machine to send messages.
