Looks Like / Works Like Model

(by Claire Robinson and Jana Saadi)

In this joint looks like / works like model, Jana and I wanted to explore the function and feel of the intersection points between tracks. The tracks will be set into the wall, and each intersection piece will have a matching set of tracks on the back. The intersection piece will start a few inches out from the wall. As the gumball moves down the track, the guest will push the intersection piece in and turn it to align the tracks (and lock the piece into place). The top of the intersection piece is a rounded dome, sized to comfortably fit in the hand and minimize pinching.

Here, we explored a purely mechanical way of locking the piece into place, modeled on a child-proof medicine cap. The guest pushes the intersection piece toward the wall and twists, as the latch catches on a corresponding piece of the wall. Continuing to turn or turning back will allow the piece to pop back out. If the guest doesn't align the tracks in time, the gumball will fall straight through, off the track and onto the floor.
