The Tale of Jimmy the Axe

Today, the Woodcutter told him that it would be one of those special days that Jimmy would get to see children. That made Jimmy really happy. He felt he was the luckiest axe in the world.

After they finished chopping the wood, the Woodcutter put on Jimmy special hat ("So no children would cut themselves on your sharp head," the Woodcutter had once told him.) and then place Jimmy in his special slot on the side of the wheelbarrel. He then pushed Jimmy and the wheel barrel full of wood to town.

As Jimmy expected, the town was full of playing in the streets and allies laughing and caring on and having a good old time. Jimmy saw some kids playing with a top and he was almost certain that it was from the wood that he help chop. As the wheel barrel turned into yard, Jimmy spied a girl coming out of a door with her mother. The girl was holding a doll and she had a smile that seemed to swallow her whole face. Jimmy almost laugh to see how happy she was and he was sure that he would be happy for weeks to come because of her.

The Woodcutter dump some of the wood from the wheelbarrel in the backyard. He then picked up a few pieces and told Jimmy to wait there while he went inside. Jimmy understood. This was the shop of the Woodcutter's uncle, the Toymaker. He never got to go into a store but he was content to look through the windows at the wonderful toys or at the street and the happy children.
