The Tale of Veronica the Ring

But the king did.

"Off to the Royal Head-Chopper-Off-er" was the phrase that could be heard the most around the castle. After that someone would be lead out of the room and to the back of castle to await execution.* All the gadgets and other objects were then placed at the side of the room to be placed in storage. A new room was built at the side of the castle to hold all of these things.

Veronica thought it was a little harsh of the King to chop off people's head just because she didn't like the gift but she thought he was just trying to please her. But she got over her initial reaction and soon could be found banishing unimpressive objects to the storage room.

One day, a Woodcutter came. The King looked him over and said, "Well, what will you do?"

"Nothing," said the Woodcutter

"Nothing?" asked the King. "Why are you wasting my time? Royal Head-Chopper-Off-er!!"

"Wait, your Majesty. Let me tell why I am here," said the Woodcutter very quickly. The King nodded. So the Woodcutter continued, "My uncle is a toymaker and he can make something that can solve your problems."

"Then why isn't he here?" said the King.

"I was getting to that," answered the Woodcutter. "He has a new baby like yourself and also like you he is a single father. He cannot afford the penalty. What I asked is that you let him try and if he fails, inflict your penalty on me."

The King thought for a few minutes and replied, "OK then. He may try and if he fails, then you will be punished." The Woodcutter then left.* Veronica was confused by that entire conversation (remember she didn't hear the Royal decree) but she just thought that it must be one of those silly things that humans sometimes do.
