Perugia, Italy
A café on a large piazza

Frank and Erik seem to have found an instant friendship.  They're both from Nebraska, and so is Julia, Frank's girlfriend.  And Erik picked them out of this huge thronging crowd of young Italians just by hearing them a little bit off.  I can't believe how spiffed up all these people are!  They're surrounding us... is tonight some kind of special festival or something?  Erik and I couldn't figure it out.  But it doesn't much matter-- it's a blast to be in such a swarm.  Right now we're at a little café on a sidewalk, enjoying some local birra with Frank and Julia.

Sorry?  Oh, yeah, we're staying in the Ostello della Gioventu.  ... Yeah, it is a rotten place to stay!  But it's so cheap, and we don't know anyone here like you guys do.  So when are you meeting up with Enzo and his friends?

Sounds great, I'd love to see the Perugia nightlife guided by some real Italians!  We usually just muck about until we find something fun to do.

Great, let's get going then....

[later, in the wee hours, surrounded by new Italian friends]

This part of the city is beautiful-- it's a hill in the very center of town, the really old part, where the cathedral is.  Enrico, one of Frank and Enzo's friends, told us about the history of the city.  It seems like the Perugians had a serious rivalry with Assisi, which is nearby.  They seem to have this history of throwing rocks at invading cities.  Enrico's even funnier when he's drunk.  But these Italians, they've got such class, they drink good stuff and they're pretty civilized.  It's so adult-like, or something.  I'm not sure.

Sure, pour me another one.  It's such a gorgeous night.  I can see all the stars.  And I'm sitting with the Beautiful People.  What a life this!  Is that ERIK I see, actually fending off gorgeous women?  That's not like him!  I think for now he might be trying to be a bit more careful with both alcohol and women!  I wonder if that will last for the rest of the trip?
