African-Americans in Medicine

Creators: Kori Bevans, Doug Pitters, Edward Semper, Denzil Vaugh

The contributions made by African American physicians to society over the past century have been extraordinary. Despite various racial barriers and obstacles, they have proven to be successful and competitive in the medical profession. Unfortunately, the accomplishments of such physicians have not been widely published.

As a result of the research of Kenneth Manning, a professor here at MIT, an extensive library containing information on African American physicians has been established. Until now, most of his work has been published in the form of papers or books. In order to increase the popularity of his work as well as further the knowledge of the general public, we have decided to create a web site entitled African Americans in Medicine.

This WWW site will provide historical information on various African American physicians over the past century. In addition it will serve as a networking source for African American physicians. Physicians will be now be able to learn of other physicians who specialize in a similar practice, and have shared similar experiences in Medical School or in the profession. Medical Students and those considering medicine will be able to gain contacts of physicians who practice in a particular medical division, hospital, or geographic location. The site will be exciting and will attract viewers from all age groups, backgrounds, and interests.

MIT HASS-D Guide on the Web

Creators: Brodie Hynes, Tom Lee, James Montgomery, Keith Szolusha, Mayo Takeuchi

This project was undertaken with the purpose of redesigning the Online HASS (Humanities Arts and Social Sciences) Guide to make it easier to use, and asthetically pleasing. The printed HASS Guide and the Online HASS Guide are used by students to select classes to satisfy the HASS requirement and also to pursue concentrations, minors, even majors in any of the courses encompassed by the HASS title. The changes made to the Online HASS Guide take advantage of the advanced features of the Netscape Navigator 2.0 (and later) WWW browser. These features include the use of frames, client-side image maps, and background colors. The graphics used are predominantly of the transparent GIF (version 89a-interlaced) format. JPEG's were also used. Sound and movie files are included for a few classes to provide aural and visual descriptions in addition to the text descriptions for the classes. There is also a class index by course.

Real Science: Kids Science Education Project

Creators: Ramy Arnaout, Tom Karlo, Sabra-Anne Kelin, Jennifer Lane, Daniel Stevenson

We have built a World-Wide Web site which will enhance 4th and 5th grade science education. The main focus of the site is a collection of simple science experiments to be performed in the classroom. Students are treated to a media-rich introduction to the experiment. They can prepare an online "lab report" summarixing their observations and data, and, in some cases, compare their results with others world-wide. Folowing completion of the experiment, students can see how the principles set forth int he experiment are used in "real life" with descriptions and lessons that entertain while educating. The site is published in both English and Japanese versions, and is equally easy to use in both.

Beyond allowing the students to learn science in a new and exciting way, the site serves as an introduction for both students and teachers on how to use the World-Wide Web and hypertext. Students and teachers both will become comfortable using the computer, reading hypertext, and navigating with their particular browser, all valuable skills.

Senior House Environment Simulation

Creators: Christopher Barron, J. Byron Davis, Michael Jacknis, Robert Morrison

In the summer of 1996, MIT's Senior House dormitory underwent extensive renovations. The original building included extensive artwork prepared by the residents; the dorm's meandering corridors and free-form decorations evoked a distinctive feeling. We have preserved the old Senior House and its artwork through photographs and an explorable model of the house accessible through the ID engine.

Cyberspace Communications

Creators: Mike Bee, Glenn Koh, Shon Lo, Becky Wagenberg

This site stemmed directly from the professors' request for a 21W785 class World-Wide Web site. In order to make the site more interesting and applicable, we have created a site that can be used both inside and outside the MIT community. The function of the site is two-fold. First, it documents the proceeding of the class itself. Second, it serves as a general source of information on the ever-changing practical, technological, and legal issues surrounding electronic publishing on the Web.
