Sulzberger Middle School
Sulzberger Middle School is a public school, which is located at 48th
and Fairmount Street in the Mill Creek neighborhood, along the buried
floodplain of Mill Creek, one block from Aspen Farms. The students are
predominantly Africa-American; many are from families with very low
incomes. The SMS/WPLP partnership began in 1995 and blossomed under
the leadership of principal Kathleen Lacey and cluster leader Janet
Samuels. The SMS/WPLP Mill Creek Project developed a new curriculum on
local history and the urban watershed that invited students to
envision how they could reshape their community. Many teachers
contributed to the success of the Mill Creek Project, including Glenn
Campbell, director of the Environment Small Learning Community, and
Don Armstead, head of the school's Computer Programs. Since 2000, SMS
has worked with Philadelphia Water Department to expand the Mill Creek
Project.
