Announcing the 6.033 Lab

January 21, 1999

Once again 6.033 is offering an additional elective 6-unit lab. The lab is designed to provide students with hands-on experience with concepts taught in 6.033. See what happened last year in lab.

Sign up for the lab during the first lecture on the second day of classes. The subject number for the lab will be 6.906, but please wait before registering for this subject, particularly because we may need to limit enrollment. Note that the lab will not satisfy the Institute or department lab requirements. Please do not ask whether you can get into the lab yet -- our announcement during lecture should answer most questions. Stay tuned...

Sign up for lab

February 2, 1999

Read over the administrivia and schedule for a taste of this year's 6.033 lab. We will provide hard copies at the first recitation on February 12. You must use the signup form in Wednesday's lecture to join the lab.

After you sign up in lecture, send an email to 6.033-lab-tas@mit.edu before 6PM on Thursday, February 4 to be considered. Please include a short paragraph of no more than 150 words on your reasons for taking the lab as well as your C background. During our first recitation on February 12, we will hand out and sign Add forms. The recitation location is TBA.

Lab oversubscribed -- please wait

February 3, 1999

Because we received 134 applications for 30 spots, we are reconsidering our enrollment strategy. We want to admit as many students as possible without damaging the quality of the instruction. The old 6PM Feb 4 deadline for your paragraph has been postponed to a date TBA. However, the first recitation is still February 12.

Athena mail problems...copy of email

February 4, 1999

Here's a copy of email prospective lab students should have received today. Athena's PO8 mail server has been acting up. You might not have received a copy.

Hi,

We now have 110 students contending for 30 spots in 6.033 lab. Because of the huge number of applications, we can only admit students who know C and can attend all recitations on Friday 2-3PM Feb 12, Feb 19, Feb 26, Apr 2, and Apr 9. However, we are trying to increase the number of admitted lab students by finding another 6.033 TA. Even if we find another TA, the number of open spots will not surpass 60 students. We will post a message as soon as we signup the new TA (probably by Friday night). Thanks again for your patience.

Lab enrollment process - respond by 6PM Monday, Feb 8th

February 6, 1999

Here's a copy of email prospective lab students should have received.

To: Prospective lab students
Subject: 6.033 lab enrollment process - respond by 6PM Monday, Feb 8th
Date: Sat, 06 Feb 1999 12:50:37 EST
From: 6.033 Lab TAs <6.033-lab-tas@MIT.EDU>

Hi,

The interest in the lab has been overwhelming: 105 students. Fortunately, we have obtained additional resources from the department so that we can take 50 students as opposed to the 30 we originally planned.

This is a 6-unit lab, but the 6 units are intense. While the time for all lab-related work may average more than 6 hours a week, part of the work goes toward 6.033 proper (e.g., writing design papers). The lab contributes 6 additional hours of work per week on average. Hence, the lab is 6 units.

*** There are easier ways to earn 6 units than by taking the lab.
*** Take the lab only if you are truly interested and have the time.

Please review the 6.033 lab announcement and administrivia. Make sure this is what you want to do, so that you don't rob other students of an opportunity by joining and dropping out. Make sure you are aware of the prerequisites for the class.

If you are taking 6.170 this semester, we highly recommend not taking the lab. 6.170 teaches important background material. Moreover, the deadlines for major projects tend to overlap.

If after reading that page you still want to take the lab, please email us at 6.033-lab-tas@mit.edu. Send us an email message before 6PM on Monday, February 8 to be considered. Please include a short paragraph of no more than 150 words on your reasons for taking the lab as well as your C background. Thanks.
