Green Space on Campus

The MIT campus is situated in an urban setting with wonderful views of the Charles River. Within the campus there are many pocket gardens for the students and staff to relax and enjoy. The Department Facilities strives to improve the landscape and also implement gardens in harmony with the setting, seasonal interest, and microclimate. We have specifically focused on our new construction projects as areas to increase green spaces as well as for the rehabilitation of some of the previous industrial sites on campus.

E32 GardenHockfield Court

What was once a parking lot has been transformed into grand open green space perfect for soaking up vitamin D at lunchtime. Along with Hockfield Court, the KI project has provided a small, street-side plaza.

Stata FlowerbedsPacific Street Extension

Perennial plantings make campus pathways more inviting. This new hardscape that connects Vassar and Albany Streets via the railroad crossing provides safe, convenient, and pleasant cross-campus access.

Steinbrenner GardenSloan School Landscapes

A variety of landscapes were designed to complement the Sloan School building. A few include the Fish Family Terrace, Bergstrom Garden, and Gruber Family Courtyard where visitors can enjoy some of MIT's public art.

Steinbrenner GardenGreen Spaces for Children

Outdoor spaces for children on campus are recognized as vital, too. The Koch Child Care Center grounds offers opportunities for the kids to learn and explore, plus, it enhances the adjacent Vassar streetscape.
