While the two glory holes are turned on and heated up only when in use, the central glass furnace containing 400 pounds of molten glass is kept at 2000 degrees Fahrenheit every minute of everyday, all year long. The only time the furnace is cold is during maintenance periods when members of the Glass Lab fix, repair and rebuild it.
