Borough

bor.ough \'b*r-(.)o-, 'b*-(.)ro-, -*(-w), -r*(-w)\ n [ME burgh, fr. OE burg fortified town; akin to OHG burg fortified place, OE beorg mountain - more at BARROW] 1a: a medieval fortified group of houses forming a town with special duties and privileges

-- From XWebster

A borough in Carolingia is a geo-political subdivision of the Barony which is based at a University or College.

There are currently boroughs at Boston University (The Borough of Southebank), Brandeis University ( The Borough of Fenmere), Harvard University (The Borough of Duncharloch), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (The Borough of Mitgaard), Northeastern University (The Borough of Huntington Greene), Tufts University (The Borough of Ivory Keep) and Wellesley College (The Borough of Felding).

Unlike colleges, boroughs are, by design, not recognized as official sub-groups by the SCA, Inc. They are recognized by the Barony of Carolingia, though, and each Borough has a seat on the Great Council of Carolingia.

Carolingia's usage of boroughs predates the invention of "colleges"; this is part of why we still use boroughs today. More importantly, we use boroughs because the college system becomes unwieldy for the very large number of school-based groups within this Barony. It allows for more flexibility and is more fluid in definition, and requires vastly less paperwork from already-overworked undergraduates.
