The following SCA events are going to be held in the Greater Boston Area this spring. Below is a description of when, where and the theme of the event. If you are interested, please attend a MITGaard meeting (every Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:30 pm, in Private Dining Room #3, on the third floor of the Student Center, W20).

Legends of Chivalry:
Weekend of September 14 - 17 at Camp Massapoag in Dunstable, MA.

Legends is a camping event set in the year 1217. From the official event announcement: The Canton of the Towers, in the Barony of Carolingia invites all good gentles of the known world to Legends of Chivalry VI. The site will open Friday and 1pm and will close Sunday at 1pm. On Friday there will be a Hurling Tournament. Saturday's activities include a William Marshal style Armoured Tournament as well as an Archery Tournament and a Thrown Weapons Tournament. After the tournaments there will be a Court followed by the Grand Feast. A Dress Ball will conclude the evening where good gentles may dance until the Matins bell rings. Sundays activities include Archery Royal Rounds.

Fees: Site fees will be: $15 for Friday arrival, $10 for Saturday arrival. There will be a Saturday only day rate of $8. Children under 12 are 1/2 price, babes-in-arms are free. The Grand Feast will be an additional $8. MITGaard has a cabin; to join us, contact the officers and come to a MITGaard meeting (see above).

Falling Leaves:

This is the Barony's traditional event for welcoming newcomers. There will be fencing, hurling, cometball, singing, dancing, merchants, games, an i Sebastiani performance, a Baronial court, and more. Dinner will be a potluck; if this is your first event, you do not need to bring a dish, otherwise bring on that can serve 8 if you want to participate. There will not be a dayboard.

Fees: None!

Flos Duellatorum:
Saturday, December 1 and Sunday, December 2 at the Higgins Armory Museum in Worcester, MA.

From the official event announcement: In concert with the Higgins Armory Museum, the Barony of Carolingia will be presenting a presentation, revel and fighter practice revolving around the Flos Duellatorum: a period combat manual that is a complete fighting and training system. Bob Charron/Duke Comm McNeill has studied this document carefully, and recreated the moves and scenarios. He has already successfully taught this material in a number of venues: and it is time to bring it to the SCA.

The lecture will take place at the Higgins Armory Museum on Saturday, in modern clothes and alongside interested non-SCA scholars, with an evening SCA revel and dance, and a Sunday SCA practice using the material at an indoor location to be determined. Pricing is also to be determined.

There are also a number of weekly or bi-monthly guild meetings which everyone is welcome to attend.

Renaissance Dance:
At dance practice we learn and do mostly fifteenth and sixteenth century dances from Italy, England, and France. Most dances are taught at practice and no partner or experience is necessary. Dance practice is held every Wednesday starting September 5 in the Sala de Puerto Rico on the 2nd floor of the MIT Student Center (usually, look for change of location signs) from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm; dress is common street clothing.

Heavy Fighting Practice:
Heavy fighting practice is held outside of Kresge on Wednesdays, for normal practice, and Thursdays, for beginner practice, starting at 7:30.

MITGaard is the MIT chapter of the Barony of Carolingia, in the Society for Creative Anachronism. The SCA is a world-wide Medieval and Renaissance history club. We are a borough of the local SCA branch, called the Barony of Carolingia.

Our primary activity is going to revels throughout the greater Boston area. There is on average one such event per month. We also attend and host special interest groups and workshops on a wide variety of topics pertaining to pre-17th century European private life.

MITGaard is a merry company of people somehow affiliated with MIT who participate in the SCA. We welcome you to join us.

We currently meet weekly on Wednesdays, at 6:30pm, in or near Private Dining Room #3, on the 3rd floor of the Student Center. We use this time to chat and make plans for upcoming events.

Questions? Send email to sca@mit.edu. A good way to stay informed of happenings in the borough is to join our mailing list, mitgaard@mit.edu. And of course, you are welcome to come to one of our weekly meetings and get to know us!
All mail sent to mitgaard@mit.edu (the Mitgaard mailing list), carolingia@bloom-beacon.mit.edu (the Barony of Carolingia's mailing list), and sca@mit.edu (Mitgaard officers and a few oldtimers) is archived in the MIT SCA discuss meeting. It's all just poured in there in chronological order (going back to May, 1994), but if you remember seeing something come over one of those lists, you can find it there.
