Conversation with Charles M. Vest
On December 6, Charles M. Vest will step down from service as President of MIT. We recently talked with him about his tenure as President and his plans for the future. Dr. and Mrs. Vest plan to live in Cambridge. High on his list is spending more time with his family — especially his two grandchildren — plus traveling, writing, and continuing his work at the national level on issues in higher education and the development of science and technology policy.
Dr. Vest will remain at the Institute as a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and will be on sabbatical for the coming year. He has accepted invitations for visiting lectureships at a number of universities here and abroad and will continue to serve on the Commission on the Intelligence Capabilities of the United States Regarding Weapons of Mass Destruction, on the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, and on the boards of IBM and DuPont.

Celebrating The Vest Years, 1990–2004

“Hundreds paid tribute to 'The Vest Years' during a 70-minute program in the Kirsch Auditorium and a two-hour festival on the “student street” inside the Stata Center on Saturday, Sept. 18. Professors, students, staff and their families greeted the honored guests on that rainy afternoon as they walked along the indoor street lined with food stalls, games, jazz combos, a cappella singing groups, and even a 12-foot-tall Elvis impersonator.” more>
