Using Outlook Express to Access / Move IMAP Mail including Outgoing SMTP authentication

Reminder : MIT Information Systems does not support use of OUTLOOK or OUTLOOK Express as a mail application at this time.

Below are the steps for setting up Outlook Express to access your electronic mail on the MIT Servers.

Configuring Outlook Express 6

    Open Outlook Express and navigate to Tools to Accounts. Users will see a window with account options:

From the Menu Options navigate to Accounts - Add- Mail

Result: You're presented with a series of splash screens to configure the Outlook Express mail application. You'll need the name of your incoming mail server to complete them. If you don't know it, you can find out.

Proceed through screens as illustrated below:

 

     

    Result: A new mail account is created and appears in the Internet Accounts list:

 

IMPORTANT: Configuring the newly created MIT Mail account to be secure and authenticated

Double-click the newly created account or click the properties button after selecting that account with a single left-click.

Result: The Properties dialog box displays:

Fill in the Name , Organizational Information and reply to address on the General Tab

 

Click the Servers tab and check the :

My server requires authentication

on the Outgoing server section at bottom

Click on the Advanced Tab and Configure the Mail account settings

Outgoing Mail server port 465 will be need to typed in manually

Port 993 on the Incoming server will display when users click the "checkbox" that states "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)"

Make sure your settings match those in the screen shot

Click OK then opt to close

Users will see the following screens . Click Yes

Then click the OK button.

This will complete the steps needed to have both secure and authenticated email at MIT

 

Should you be prompted with the a Certificate Message you can import an MIT Site Certificate using the information found at http://web.mit.edu/is/help/ie/ie_importcacert.html

This import will stop the prompting each time you initialize Outlook or Outlook Express.

     

Outlook Express is now configured to access your MIT mail account.

Moving mail from the MIT mail server to your local machine.

Upon accessing the MIT mail servers using Microsoft Outlook, you'll be prompted for your Kerberos password. After entering the password users should be able to see your MIT mailbox and messages

Left-click the first message in the list. Scroll to the last message and use a combination of the shift key and the left mouse button to select the messages currently in your mailbox.
Result: Upon selection the messages will be highlighted.

With a right-click and drag you can move messages to the local Inbox that comes default on Microsoft Outlook Express.

Users can choose to purge deleted messages from the Microsoft Outlook Edit menu.

At this point the mail will have been removed from the MIT mail server and you can perform the tasks that necessitated moving mail off of the mail server. Your inbox should look like the following or you can use WebMail (http://web.mit.edu/webmail) to check your mail.

Users can move mail back onto their mail server by selecting your "locally" stored mail and moving it (via drag) back to the INBOX of the poXX.mit.edu account you have been assigned at MIT.
