E. The Striate Cortex
Hubel
and Wiesel have initially identified two major classes of cortical cells
depicted in Figure 12 which they called
simple and complex. Simple cells have one or more subfields in which the
response is either ON or OFF. Complex cells yield both ON and OFF responses
throughout their receptive fields. Simple cells form several different
sub-classes that will be discussed below.
