Message: Connection
failed, userid and password
You get this error message when trying to run SumMIT with Oracle: "Sorry, the connection failed. Oracle error - 1017. Please check your userid and password." |
Remember to type your Oracle
userid and password, which may be different from your MIDAS or Athena userid
and password.
To get an Oracle userid (or if you forget your Oracle password), contact:

Message: Connection failed,
MITOTG not found
You get this error message when trying to run SumMIT with Oracle: "Sorry, the connection failed. Oracle error 12154. MITOTG not found in tnsnames.ora file." |
You need to update Oracle's TNSNames file. (Windows) To update a Windows computer with the latest Oracle names file, go to the MIT Software Distribution for Windows web page; then download and install the TNSNames Updater. (Mac) To update a Mac computer with the latest Oracle names file, go to the MIT Software Distribution for Mac web page; then download and install the TNSNames Updater. |
Symptom: Logon window fields
are too large
The SumMIT logon window comes up, but the UserID and Password fields are oversized and don't fit on the screen. |
Try restarting your computer. (Windows users) Select the middle option on Shutdown window ("Restart the computer"). The last option ("Close all programs and log on as a different user") doesn't fix the problem. |
Message: ORA -00020 "Maximum
number of processes exceeded"
You get this error message when trying to logon to ESandi or another SumMIT application |
Try again in 5 minutes; there may be too many users trying to get in at once. If the message persists, call Diane Monahan (3-6730), as the Oracle database may be having a problem. |
Message: Connection failed,
O7DAL extension
You get this error message when trying to run SumMIT with Oracle: "Sorry, the connection to the Mainframe has failed. The O7DAL extension was not found." |
On the $SumMIT logon screen, you need to select "Oracle Gateway" (the default) as the "Connection Type" (not "MIT Network"). |
Scenario of what happens | What to do |
---|---|
(Windows users) When you double click on a shortcut to one of the SumMIT application files (LBRs), Omnis7 opens, but no logon screen displays. To display the logon screen, you need to use Open library... from the File menu on the menu bar.
|
To display the SumMIT logon screen directly after clicking on a shortcut, you need to enter information about the shortcut "target". To do so,

( 12/17/02) When you try to (re)install Oracle, you get a message saying that "an error occurred communicating with the ftp server....Server response; error code = 103 - error resolving domain name". Alternatively, Oracle is incompletely installed in the Oracle 7.3 folder - only the Network and Admin folders are present.
|
Ignore the error
message; but when the Oracle installer asks if you are on the MIT network,
you should say No.
Note: The ftp server used by the installer has been eliminated, with the result that selecting Yes causes Oracle to download incompletely.
If you need help with this step, contact the Business Liaison Team at (617) 252-1177 or business-help@mit.edu |
(Mac users with OS X) When you try to run $SumMIT or Omnis7, they "unexpectedly quit" or experience a "shared library" problem. |
You need to set Omnis 7, which is an application program in the SumMIT folder, to run in the "classic environment". To do so,
You should now be able to run $SumMIT. |
(Mac users)
Messages:
You get this message when trying to logon to $SumMIT with Oracle. |
Your Oracle application is not working; it will not support SumMIT, BrioQuery, or COEUS. The simplest solution is to reinstall Oracle. (12/02) When installing Oracle, you need to answer NO towards the end of the installation, when asked if you are on the MIT network. Otherwise, Oracle is not properly installed For further explanation, see the first error described in "Mac users" section. |
(Mac users) SumMIT doesn't work; when you go to your Oracle folder, the Oracle Applications folder displays a file icon (rather than a folder icon). As a result, your Oracle Applications folder does not open (so that Oracle cannot be tested). |
This can happen
on a Mac with OS 9. To fix the problem,
|
(Mac users) You double click to run one of your SumMIT files, but:
|
You may have more than one version of Omnis (the programming environment for SumMIT) on your workstation. If so, when you double click on a SumMIT file, an older version of Omnis is being run. To run SumMIT, and then correct the situation on your workstation,

(Mac users) Message: You
are not authorized...
You get this message when you try to run the timesheet system, even though your payroll authorization has not changed. |
On a Mac, SumTime (the Timesheet system) will not run unless the filename used is "SUMTIME.LBR" (but whether the letters are in upper or lower case doesn't matter). If you changed the filename for any reason, you need to change it back in order for the Timesheet system to open. |
