Summary of installation steps Steps for installing $SumMIT with Oracle on a power Mac are:
Step A -

Download/install/test Oracle software

  • Is Oracle already installed?
  • Is Oracle Client software installed on your workstation?

To find out, look for a folder named Oracle in your Applications folder or on the first level of your hard drive.

Note: Oracle is also needed for running COEUS, BrioQuery, and other applications.

  • If Oracle not installed, download and install it

Steps 1 -3 below require you to have or obtain a personal certificate in order to download Oracle Client.

To download Oracle by means of an MIT personal certificate,

  1. Go to MIT Software Distribution and download the Oracle installer.

Note: This page includes a link for obtaining a personal certificate.

  2. After the download, double click on Oracle_installer, and follow the instructions provided to complete the installation.

Note: Oracle can be installed in your Applications folder or on the first level of your hard drive.

  3. (12/17/02) If the installer asks if you are on the MIT network, you should say No.

Note: The ftp server used by the installer has been eliminated, with the result that selecting Yes causes Oracle to download incompletely.

If you need help with this step, contact the Business Liaison Team at (617) 252-1177 or business-help@mit.edu.

  • Add names entry for "mitotg"

You do NOT need to perform this step if you downloaded Oracle after 3/1/99.

To update your Mac computer with the latest Oracle names file, go to the MIT Software Distribution for Mac web page; then download and install the TNSNames Updater.

  • Test Oracle installation

You do NOT need to perform this step unless SumMIT does not start up in Step C.

To test the Oracle installation,

  1. From Oracle folder, open Applications, then Networking, then NetTest. From Database menu on menu bar, select Logon.
    Result: A logon window opens.

  2. Type your SumMIT with Oracle username and password, where indicated; under Database, type "mitotg"; click on Login.
Note: To get an Oracle userid for SumMIT, contact Diane Monahan at 3-6730 or dianem@mit.edu

Results: A message "Attempting connection...." displays; then a results window opens. You should get a result of "normal, successful completion".

  3. Was the login successful?

If yes, then Oracle is successfully installed.
If no, contact the Business Liaison Team at (617) 252-1177 or business-help@mit.edu.

  4. Close the results window; then select File < Quit.
Step B -

Download/install $SumMIT software

To download SumMIT,

  1. Click here to download a new SumMIT folder to your Mac workstation. The SumMIT folder includes Omnis 7 v3.6.4 and $SumMIT library files.

You need a certificate to download this file. For more information about certificates, see: http://web.mit.edu/is/cert/

Result: First, an "SumMIT-Mac-Installer.sea.hqx" file is downloaded to your Netscape downloads directory (usually your desktop). The "hqx" file decodes to create "SumMIT-Mac-Installer.sea", which then unstuffs to create your SumMIT Folder. The process usually takes a few minutes.

  2. You can move the SumMIT folder to the first level of your startup drive (or another suitable location).

    (7/11/2003) You have just installed $SumMIT v4.60a (including E-Time v5.00a).

Step C -

Run $SumMIT to see if it works

To run SumMIT,
  1. Open your new SumMIT folder; double click on the file "SumMIT.LBR".
Result: Omnis should start up and present $SumMIT logon window.

  2. Enter your SumMIT userid and password.
To get an Oracle userid for SumMIT, contact Diane Monahan at 3-6730 or dianem@mit.edu

  3. Can you can get to SumMIT main menu?
    • If yes, then installation was successful.
    • If no, click here for online help.

If you need help, contact Diane Monahan at 3-6730 or dianem@mit.edu

  4. (ESandi users) Try running ESandi; when you get to the ESandi menu, click on "All Appointments" to see if any records are listed.

If no records display, you may not have the correct Kerberos for Mac (KfM) installed on your computer.

Since ESandi runs in the Classic environment under Mac OS X, Kerberos for OS 9 must be installed.

Go to the following URL to download the correct version of KfM:
    http://web.mit.edu/is/help/kerberos

  5. If $SumMIT works,
    • to save startup time, you can make aliases to the LBR files you regularly use and put them on your desktop or in your Apple Menu or applications launcher.

For example, "SumTime.lbr" runs ETime (timesheets and vouchers) and "ESandi.lbr" runs ESandi.

    • if you need access to the $SumMIT main menu, make an alias of the file "SumMIT.LBR".
Step D -

Delete unneeded files

You can now delete these files:
  • your old Summit folder, if you have one (otherwise, you may have difficulty running the new Summit),
  • downloaded files (Vise Oracle installer and its "hqx" file; SumMIT-Mac-Installer.sea and its .hqx file).
