NSF Fellowships

NSF fellowships for underrepresented minorities, women and young researchers at US institutions are available to assist with the costs of attending the 59th CIRP General Assembly in Boston. The followships are being administered by Prof. Christopher A. Brown at WPI, email CIRP-NSF@WPI.EDU (award number 0940709). The application deadline is July 15, fellowships will be announced by July 22.

Restaurants

Restaurants convienient to CIRP hotels.
As with any major city in the United States, tipping is expected for almost every service including taxis, wait staff, and hotel attendants. Good service warrants a 15% tip and excellent service 20%.

Things to Do

Boston has activities for visitors of all ages. There are endless opportunities for adventure, education and entertainment.

Climate

In August, the average temperature in Boston is 80.0° F/ 27.0° C and due to the proximity to the ocean, the humidity is quite high. There is also a chance of rain. Sunglasses, hats and sun block are beneficial for this time of the year. We also suggest that accompanying persons wear comfortable walking shoes for the day program.

Currency

The currency of the United States is the U.S. dollar. The U.S. dollar is normally abbreviated as the dollar sign, $, or as USD. It is divided into 100 cents. Money can be exchanged at Logan International Airport, ATMs, banks, and at hotels. Credit cards are widely accepted in area restaurants, shops, and hotels.

Taxes

The general sales tax in Boston is 6.25% and is applied to meals, durable goods and services. It is also added to the price of clothing in excess of $175. Hotel occupancy tax is currently 12.45% including state, city and convention tax.

Electricity

Electricity in the United States is 120V, 60Hz, and flat two-pin outlets are used.
