Design Assistance and Outsourcing

The coordinator can assist with your projects, large and small, from concept to completion. This can include advice in component material selection and design for practical machining applications as well as overall mechanical device design and drafting. The coordinator orders materials and schedules work through the Central Machine Shop and outside machine and specialty shops for cost effective completion. The coordinator services are provided free of charge to members of the MIT community.

Machining Services

Six full-time machinists, highly skilled and experienced in a research environment are here to help with your projects. Utilizing modern cnc equipment along with Mastercam programing software, they provide efficient, precision part machining in a wide variety of materials to meet your specifications.

Welding, Brazing and Fabrication

High quality welding services are available on aluminum, stainless steel, metals, and plastics with capabilities to weld to high vacuum specifications for items such as chambers, piping, and vessels.

Cutting, bending and fabricating of sheet metal and structural metal parts is also available.

Stockroom and Hardware Supply

The stock clerk will assist customers with material and hardware requests. Purchases may be made with cash, check or requisition. The inventory of materials includes commonly used metals (Aluminum, Steel Stainless Steel, Brass and Copper Etc.) along with some exotic metals (Inconel, Hastalloy, Titanium, Etc.)

We also stock many plastics (Acrylic, Polycarbonate Etc.)

Tool Loan

We have an assortment of measuring, cutting and hand tools that we can loan out to the MIT community. Please have your MIT ID ready to sign out tooling.
