RECENT ACTIVITIES
Spring 2004

During the Spring semester, the Task Force gathered background information on MIT's current set of common curricular requirements and its undergraduates. Members met regularly during the Spring Term and heard from faculty who have oversight of various portions of the current General Institute Requirements. The Task Force spoke with faculty representatives associated with the:

The group also met with Marilee Jones, Dean of Admissions, who presented a profile of MIT students and applicants and provided insight into how this population has changed over time. The Task Force reviewed statistical data and surveys that shed light on student enrollment patterns and opinions on the GIRs.

Outside of these meetings, one or more members of the Task Force met with the following groups to review its charge and overall plan as well as to hear suggestions about issues and areas to consider. These groups included:

The student members of the Task Force began outreach to the student community. During the term, a forum open to the entire community and two roundtable discussions for students who expressed interest in actively participating in the work of the Task Force were held. The student members reported regularly to the Task Force on the input provided at these events.
