Approved Methods for Disinfectant Residuals To comply with provisions of the Surface Water Treatment Rule monitoring under Subpart H of 40 CFR §141.74, public water systems must measure residual disinfectant concentrations with one of the analytical methods in the following table. The methods are contained in the 18th, 19th and 20th editions of Standard Methods. (When using the 18th edition, corrections to SM-4500-Cl-E and 4500-Cl-G, and procedures for conducting continuous measurements of chlorine residuals are described in Section IV of Technical Notes on Drinking Water Methods (EPA/600/R-94/173) available from National Technical Information Service, (NTIS) order number PB95-104766.) |

List 3 - Pre-Screen Testing List 3 contaminants have newly emerged as drinking water concerns and, in most cases, only have methods in an early stage of development. Monitoring for List 3 contaminants will be performed only after future rulemaking specifies methods to determine whether a listed contaminant occurs in sufficient frequency in the most vulnerable systems or sampling locations to warrant its being included in future Assessment Monitoring or Screening Surveys. |

NOTE #2: If uranium (U) is determined by mass, a 0.67 pCi/ug of uranium conversion factor must be used. This conservative factor is based on the 1:1 activity ratio of U-234 to U-238 that is characteristic of naturally occuring uranium. |
