Unit 1: Orientation: Professional Responsibility and Common Problems

For Feb. 10:
Skim Part 1 & 2 of Introduction on Concepts
Read before class: NSPE Code of Ethics and at least one other code of ethics in the Ethics Center, and the following cases and judgments: Case 88-6, Case 89-7, Case 90-5, Case 84-4, Case 92-4, Case 92-6. In class we discussed some similar situations and considered a wide variety of questions, such as how these situations may arise and good responses to them. The Board of Ethical Review (BER) of the NSPE limits itself to making a judgment on whether certain actions are ethical or unethical on the basis of how they measure up against the NSPE Code of Ethics. Come prepared to discuss the NSPE BER judgments on these cases Consider both the content of their judgment, and the reasons they give for it. By Sunday evening send by email to whitbeck@mit.edu your 200-300 word discussion of one of the judgments that you find most interesting or problematic.
