ALA 1997

African Literature Association 1997 Conference
"FESPACO Nights in Michigan : African Film and Literature"
Twenty-Third Annual Conference of the African Literature
Association
Hosted by Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan
April 16-19, 1997
(Convenor: Kenneth W.Harrow, Dept of English, Morrill Hall,
Michigan State University, E. Lansing, MI 48824-1036. tel. 517-
353-7243; fax 517-353-3755; e-mail harrow@pilot.msu.edu)

The 1997 ALA conference will be held at the Kellogg Center at
Michigan State University. It will focus on recent developments
in African film, although papers on literature will be welcomed
as usual. Plenary sessions will feature emergent filmmakers, such
as Gaston Kabore, Bassek Ba Kobhio, Ngozi Onwurah, Francois
Woukouache; noted theorists and filmmakers such as Manthia
Diawara and Trin T. Minh-ha; and established filmmakers such as
Assia Djebar and Gaston Kabore. Many others have been invited,
but have not yet responded. Workshop topics include anthropology
and film, the teaching of African film, history and film, and, of
course, literature and film. Our special nights we call FESPACO
and CARTHAGE nights in honor of the African film festivals held
biannually. This is our modest attempt to provide the ALA with a
film festival...in Michigan.

Panels and paper proposals on all topics ranging from film to
literature, both of Africa and the Diaspora, are welcome. Send
all paper and panel abstracts to Kenneth W.Harrow, Dept of
English, Morrill Hall, Michigan State University, E. Lansing, MI
48824-1036. tel. 517-353-7243; fax 517-353-3755; e-mail
harrow@pilot.msu.edu). Please note that you have to be a member
of the ALA to present a paper at the conference. The deadline for
submission of proposals is November 1, 1996.

Information on registration will follow later.
