    Sub-Theme:

Resurrecting African Self Knowledge and Identity through an African

    Venue:

    Date:

    Friday 22- Monday 25 May 1998

    Call for participation:

The 1st International African People's Conference took place at the SOS
Children's Village in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe on the weekend of 23-26 May
1997. The conference which incorporated the launching of the SAA, on
Africa Day, also witnessed the first ever African Cultural Carnival in
Zimbabwe. Among other things, under discussion were disciplinary and
interdisciplinary issues related to the development of Africa and its
people. The conference, attended by delegates, guests and/or speakers
from Botswana, Germany, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, USA, Zambia and
Zimbabwe provided a platform for linking, networking and exchanging of
    views and ideas.

The major thrust behind the 2nd International African People's
Conference will be the question of African pride, Self-Esteem,
Self-Knowledge, Identity and Self-Development. Efforts will be made to
work out ways and means by which the African Awareness concept may be
related to the quest for self knowledge and therefore more positive self
    concept.

African Awareness, as a concept, relates to raising a better
understanding of who we are as African people including looking at our
past, our present and our future aspirations. Further, it is designed
at facilitating for an exposition of African culture and also analysing
the role and influence of Africa in shaping world civilisation. The
fields to be addressed amongst others are, Education, Arts and Culture,
Current Affairs, History and Archaeology, Science and Technology, Gender
Studies, Economics, Environmental Studies, Social and Welfare Studies.
Paramount to the concept of African Awareness is the tapping into our
cultural heritage and the ways of our ancestors as a means of
understanding ourselves and hence advancing and developing with a
strong sense of self. Also worthy of note, are the notions of self help
and self reliance which, if properly enhanced, will enable Africans to
attain greater pride and self esteem.

This invitation extends to any and all individuals and/or organisations
that are interested in the progress of Africa and its people. Please
fill in accompanying form and mail it together with your abstract.

Believing in the future of Africa
