    .1998 M-NET FILMS AWARDS NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED=20

    The nominations for the 1998 M-Net All Africa Film Awards have been
    selected by a panel of eight judges, who met in Sandton last week, to vie=
    w
    22 films from 11 African countries. Cash prizes totalling R250 000 will =
    be
    given to artists and technicians from the whole continent, when the Film
    Awards ceremony is held in Pretoria's State Theatre on the 14th of
    November.

    Morocco has received the most nominations for 1998, with director, Sa=E2d
    Chra=EFbi's Femmes..et Femmes having been chosen for a total of eight
    nominations. Another film that received an impressive number of nominatio=
    ns
    (7) this year was Tableau Ferraille (directed by Moussa S=E9ne Absa) from
    Senegal.

    Malian director Abdoulay=E9 Ascofare's film Faraw! Une M=E9re des Sables =
    also
    attracted favourable response from the jury, receiving a total of five of
    the nominations.=20

    This year's film award's jury consisted of Raouf Ben Amor from Tunisia, R=
    os
    Sarkin from Durban, June Givanni from England, Prof Anny Wynchank from
    Cape Town, and from Johannesburg, Neville Sing, Moonyeenn Lee, George Men=
    oe
    and Ettie Feldman. Film guru, Dr Lionel Ngakane, remains as M-NET's Advis=
    or
    to the film awards, with 1998 marking the fourth year that he has oversee=
    n
    the judging process.=20

    Two special awards: the Manie van Rensburg Lifetime Achievement Award and
    the Paulin Vieyra Merit Award, named after the Senegalese pioneer of the
    African Cinema, to younger directors, will also be announced on the
    evening.

    JUDGES FOR THE 1998 M-NET FILM AWARD'S JUDGES:

    Raouf Ben Amor is a leading Tunisian actor and cultural organiser who has
    worked with the likes of Roman Polanski, Franco Zeffirelli, and Roberto
    Rossellini. He has participated in more than 20 international films, loca=
    l
    films and television series. He has served on the board of directors at
    the Carthage Film Festival in Tunis, the Tabarka Jazz Festival, the
    Hammamet International Cultural Centre in Tunisia and the Assitah Film
    Festival in Morocco.

    Ros Sarkin is the founder of the Durban International Film Festival and a
    long-time civic and cultural leader in Durban. She actively ran the
    festival for 17 years and is now a consultant. Since 1980, she has been =
    a
    city councilor, currently serving on both the Durban Metro Council, as we=
    ll
    as the North Central Council. She was recently elected chairperson of th=
    e
    board of the Durban Arts Association and also chairs the Board of Trustee=
    s
    of the Durban Art Gallery.

    June Givanni is a freelance film programmer and researcher living in the =
    UK
    with 15 years of specialist resource knowledge and experience in the fiel=
    d
    of African interest films. She has international experience in programmin=
    g
    and researching film and television in Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and
    North America. For several years she headed the African Caribbean Unit o=
    f
    the British Film Unit and organised the film component of Africa '95. She
    is currently a programmer of the Planet Africa section of the Toronto
    International Film Festival. =09
    Born in Morocco, Prof Anny Wynchank has travelled internationally and now
    lectures in Francophone African Literature at the Department of French
    Language and Literature at the University of Cape Town. In 1993, she
    followed the trajectory of the Senegalese writer Sembene Ousmane, from
    literature to films. She now researches films from Franco African
    countries.

    Neville Sing studied journalism and Social Science at Rhodes University a=
    nd
    the University of Natal. Apart form becoming involved in sport and
    politics, he promoted local and African music and moved to film and video
    training and production, relocating to the Cape. He subsequently joined
    the Department of=20
    Arts, Culture, Science and Technology as Head of Film, developing and
    implementing policy on the restructuring of the film industry. He is
    currently involved in executive producing film and television projects fo=
    r
    Primedia Pictures.

    Moonyeenn Lee has been an artist's agent for the past twenty-four years a=
    nd
    heads up MLA, the most successful casting agency in South Africa. She wa=
    s
    trained by the late Jimmy Fraser, then head of Fraser and Dunlop, London.=
    =20
    She has contributed her vast experience to more than seven major features
    to date and is fully occupied with developing new films for her company,
    Khulisa.

    George Menoe is the CEO of the Black Filmmakers Association and has been
    integrally involved with the industry and with theatre in South Africa, t=
    he
    USA, Japan and Kenya. He has been Assistant/Casting Director for nine
    international features, including OUT OF AFRICA, FLAME TREES OF THIKA and
    THE NAIROBI AFFAIR. In March 1997, George Menoe was honoured by the
    Directors' Guild of America at their annual awards dinner in Hollywood
    where he received a gold director's chair for his lifetime achievement in
    the cinema. George is currently busy with " The African Connection", a 13
    part series for SABC 2.

    Ettie Feldman is a member of S.A.G.E and has 25 years working experience =
    as
    a film editor in various countries. For the past 10 years she has
    supervised editing and handled post production on feature films, televisi=
    on
    dramas, television series, documentaries, commercials, trailers and
    promotions including "Shaka Zulu".

    Dr. Lionel Ngakane has lived in South Africa, Senegal and London and has
    worked across the African continent as a filmmaker and crusader for the
    development of African cinema. He was instrumental in the creation of
    FEPACI, the Pan African Federation of Filmmakers, based in Ougadougou, an=
    d
    in 1995, was decorated by the President of Burkina Faso. He serves on ma=
    ny
    influential film bodies and is currently working on the script of his new
    feature film, Heso (My Home). Lionel is the official Advisor to the M-NE=
    T
    All Africa Film Awards.
