    Hosted by the Black Expressive Culture Studies Association and the Institute
    for African American Affairs in Pan-African Studies through the Office of
    Public Service and Outreach in the College of Continuing Studies.
    You are invited to participate in the Inaugural World Conference of the
    Black Expressive Culture Studies Association scheduled for November 19-21,
    1998 in Kent, Ohio. Please join us in one or more of the ways described in
    this notification. A tentative outline of the program is provided below to
    help you determine your participation or contribution.

    Program Outline
    "Celebrating Black Expressive Culture," the central theme of the conference,
    is explored from three major angles, which are formulated as organizing
    themes discussed in plenary sessions to be followed by concurrent panels.

    1. The plenary sessions will map out major areas of theoretical,
    critical, and ideological interest in order to establish dialogues and
    discussions between and among the panelists and the audience. Each session
    has a specific theme to be tackled from the vantage points of the panelists'
    own aesthetic and ideological orientations.
    2. The themes and subthemes of plenary sessions are then explored in
    the subsequent panels, which may be interdisciplinary or area-specific,
    depending on accepted panel and paper proposals.

    registration form-along with your membership dues to the Black Expressive
    Culture Studies Association if applicable.

    Conference Fee (includes the plenary and panel sessions, keynote
    presentation, and materials): Preregistration--$70 for members and $85 for
    nonmembers; students $25. Other fees: Friday luncheon $12; Saturday dinner
    dance $20. On-site registration (at a higher fee) may be available if space
    permits.
    Location and Lodging: Conference sessions will be held at Kent State
    University, Kent, Ohio, and the Sheraton Suites, 1989 Front Street, Cuyahoga
    Falls, Ohio. The Sheraton Suites has a block of rooms reserved at a special
    rate of $92 for single and double rooms, tax not included. A $15 per person
    charge will be assessed for additional people. All reservations should be
    made directly by calling the Sheraton Suites at (800)325-5788 or
    (330)920-7505. Please mention that you are attending the Inaugural World
    Conference of the Black Expressive Culture Studies Association. After
    October 20, 1998, these rooms will be released for general sale; however,
    the hotel will continue to accept reservations on a space-available basis.
    Additional lodging is also available at the intersection of State Route 43
    and Interstate 76, about four miles from the Kent Campus. Arrangements for
    lodging should be made directly with these establishments: call the Holiday
    Inn at (330)678-0101 or the Hampton Inn at (330)677-9400.
    Shuttle Transportation: Kent State University will provide free airport
    shuttle 8:00pm on Thursday, November 19 and Sunday, November 22. Further
    information about this service will be provided in your conference
    confirmation letter. Shuttle One Service will also provide shuttle service
    for a fee. Shuttle One Service departs from the airport on the half hour
    and departs from the Sheraton Suites on the hour. Contact Shuttle One
    Service directly at (800)767-4767 or (330)494-5800 to make your reservations
    or for schedule and fare information to other area hotels.
    Special Airfare: US Airways has been designated as the official carrier for
    this conference and agrees to offer an exclusive low fare to the attendees.
    This special fare will offer a 5% discount off unrestricted coach fares will
    apply with 7 day advance reservation and ticketing required. Plan ahead and
    receive an additional 5% discount by ticketing 60 days or more prior to
    departure. These discounts are valid provided all rules and restrictions
    are met and are applicable for travel from all points on US Airways' route
    system. These discounts may not be combined with other discounts or
    promotions. Additional restrictions may apply on international travel.

    discounts, you (or your professional travel consultant) must call the US

    Withdrawal/Cancellation Policy: Cancellations must be received in writing.
    Cancellations made less than three working days prior to the conference are
    subject to a 20 percent nonrefundable fee. No cancellations will be
    accepted after the conference begins. If a program is canceled due to
    insufficient enrollment, all fees will be refunded. If you are unable to
    attend, you may arrange to have a substitute attend in your place.
