Among other things, you may want to consider viewing the two films based on
the novel, the first directed by Zoltan Korda and released in 1951 starred
Sidney Poitier and Canada Lee, when the National Party was just at the
beginning of implementing its policies of apartheid; and the second directed
by Anant Singh and released in 1995. The US premier of Anant Singh's film
was witnessed by an audience which included, among others, US First Lady
Hilary Rodham Clinton, and South African President Nelson Mandela, who
described the film as "a monument to the future."
