Image 1Image 2Commentary
These coal Tipples are located at the same mine in France. They are built of different materials, steel and reinforced concrete, yet serve exactly the same function.
Here are a folded plate between two railroad cars, and a sheet of corrugated metal. This illustrates two entirely different situations in which folding was used as a structural solution.
The column in the left image reveals rotting caused by frequent floor washing. Wood, due to its material properties, will not withstand a constant flux between wet and dry. The base of the column in the image on the right shows one solution of concrete and a wrapping of copper.
This is the Kirche am Steinhof located in a suburb of Wien(Vienna). It was designed and built by Otto Wagner as on of the pieces of a larger plan for a mental institute.
Two majestic systems which exist naturally in our environment. Both are well adapted in form and material, and are solid examples of stability and firmness.
Here are two systems (one a roof system and one a floor system) that perform similar functions, yet are made of different materials (metal and wood). With all types of materials, the issues of strength and stability must be addressed.
La Tourette, by architect Le Corbusier, is a wonderful structure to examine for its varied types of vertical support(sheer walls, rectangular and round concrete columns, varied placement, etc.).
