World Wide What??

MIT Freshman Seminar 6a22

Subject Description

The World Wide Web (WWW) and it relation to society will be the focus of this seminar. In particular participants will assist with the further developement of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science homepages. The last few years have seen a revolution of "the Information Superhighway," with the focus on a new medium of presenting information called WWW. So what exactly is this entity known as WWW? Why do we need to learn about it? Why can't we develop this technology and do it without all this talking about it? Well, because this new technology raises many questions and concerns as the use of cyberspace becomes a major means of communication. We will work with the WWW, but we will also consider and discuss many of the hot topics related to it, including privacy, piracy, social uses (or misuses), and its affect(s) on us as a society. Think about it - your "home" page is theoretically accessible by anyone in the world! So, come learn about WWW, its uses here at MIT and elsewhere.

We will focus on system and graphic design, including the design of personal home pages. The type of work we'll do will vary, depending on the interests of the participants. There will be required outside assignments, such as Web browsing and critiquing web documents. Additionally work will proceed with the EECS departmental homepages. The assignments will be completed working both individually and in small groups.
