MIT Center for Real Estate

Our graduates build the future

Prospective Students - Overview

In the past, those who worked in real estate acquired their skills on the job and through accidents of experience, as many still do. However, as the practice of real estate has become more complex in structure and more international in scope, both industry and academia have recognized the need for a more specialized education beyond the bounds of a traditional MBA program, and so MIT created the Master of Science in Real Estate Development (MSRED) degree program.

MIT's MSRED program was the first one-year graduate program in the country to educate men and women in the full range of skills demanded of real estate professionals today. It is recognized worldwide as a leader in the field with almost 600 graduates in responsible positions with leading real estate organizations in the United States and abroad.

The curriculum integrates knowledge from each of the major disciplines that contributes to the real estate industry in a rigorous course of study that balances theory with practice and draws heavily upon the relationship with industry which characterizes education at MIT.

The program is distinguished from other graduate-level real estate programs by its 12-month duration and its full access to the university's academic resources. The program is housed at the Center for Real Estate, one of many interdisciplinary centers at MIT which promote the growth of knowledge in areas that cut across the boundaries of traditional departments. This structure enables students to enroll in core courses taught by faculty from the departments of Economics, Urban Studies and Planning, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Architecture, and the Sloan School of Management and in electives throughout the Institute.
