Thesis Abstract: Integrated Vehicle Design Optimization for Transportation Networks
|
The objective of this research is to develop a framework for the initial optimization of the vehicle design within a network.
Traditionally, vehicle design decisions are determined for a defined set of operational requirements, where the operational
requirements are set for a single destination objective. When multiple destinations exist and vehicles must travel between
multiple locations, a transportation network problem is analyzed. In transportation networks, the optimal operational requirements
are determined for a given set of vehicles, under the constraints of the pre-defined vehicle capabilities. A high degree of
coupling exists between the vehicle and the network, and it is therefore necessary to integrate these sub-systems into the initial
design framework to achieve a true system optimum. The examples considered in this research are the design of an air transportation
network and a space transportation network. Using the air transportation network as baseline, the space transportation network
can be seen as a generalization, where many of the assumptions used in air transportation networks no longer hold, such as a
static graph. Space transportation networks are dynamic networks where the nodes in the graph are time varying, which creates
a dependency of the network parameters on time. This research will provide insight into the effects of dynamic network on the
transportation system as well as develop a framework to analyze the integrated design of a vehicle in a time-varying network.
