MIT will remain open during the period of Monday July 26 through Thursday July 29, but departments, labs and centers - while taking into account the needs of their own operations - may need to provide some flexibility to those whose commutes would be seriously affected. Among the suggestions that supervisors may wish to consider for those four days are the following:

Granting Vacation Time

This may be a time when many people will want to take their vacations. While no extra vacation time will be granted for this period, we urge supervisors to grant such requests when possible.

Flexible Scheduling

Since the majority of road closures will occur from mid-afternoon to late evening, departments or offices may want to consider creating variable schedules that may start and end earlier than usual.

Telecommuting

Certain jobs may lend themselves to being performed from a location outside the usual work location. Some departments are considering allowing employees in such jobs to work full or part days from their homes or other remote locations during that period.

Before you begin working at home, IS&T strongly encourages you to set up and test your Internet connection and access to MIT network resources.

Information and Advice

Your Human Resources Officer or the staff in the Center for Work, Family and Personal Life can assist you in evaluating these and other alternatives to regular work patterns and schedules.
