1.1.5 Figures

Figures (including sketches of the experimental apparatus and graphs) display at a glance the principle of operation or the qualitative impact of data. All figures are identified in a written document by a figure number and an accompanying descriptive caption (number and caption go below the figure). In an oral presentation figure are titled above the figure and no number is given.

Figures of sketches should not be overly ornamented or fussy, but clear and schematic.

Graphs must have axes clearly labeled and units of measurement clearly identified. Data point must be visible, curves identified by callouts.
