Finding the Best People for Facilities
The Human Resources (HR) and Labor Relations team is responsible for recruiting, managing the hiring process, and orienting new employees to the department as well as assisting mangers with all types of personnel issues. This team, which also maintains personnel information, works with MIT’s central HR department to attract and retain top employees and to work through performance or other human resource issues.
Labor Relations works with employees represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). Labor Relations negotiates contracts with bargaining unit employees and handles mediation and grievances for service employees.
HR has launched an employee performance evaluation process as part of the team’s employee retention initiatives. The department requires that all administrative staff who supervise support and administrative employees take a training session to ensure successful appraisals. The training recommends, for example, that the performance appraisal should take place as a conversation and that both employee and primary reviewer should prepare for that conversation.
