Keeping MIT Sparkling
Custodial Services is responsible for cleaning approximately 8 million square feet of MIT offices, classrooms, labs, and public spaces. Facilities’ largest group, with 250 staff members, Custodial Services is divided into teams assigned to specific floors and tasks. Teams aim to provide customers with top quality cleaning services, sanitation, and coordinate pest removal. Most cleaning is conducted during evening and night shifts to minimize potential disruptions. The unit also supports campus and department, lab, and center events including furniture setup.
Custodial Standards
- All public areas will be clean, reflecting the professional image of MIT.
- Offices will be clean.
- Special requests will be completed in a timely fashion.
- Emergencies will be addressed promptly.
- All interactions with the customer will be professional.

Emergencies: Floods, heavy snow, chemical spills, and other emergencies will significantly affect the level of routine service. Custodians provide first response to emergencies during off hours.
