Campus Recycling Relies on Grounds Management

MIT’s accelerating recycling program relies on pickup, sorting, and management by Grounds Services staff. Campus recycling rates more than doubled to 22% in 2002. MIT’s campus-wide goal, in partnership with the City of Cambridge, was to boost the recycling rate to 40% by 2005. MIT's current recycling rate is 45%.

Grounds Services staff work with administrative and student groups, including the Environment, Health & Safety Office, to increase the amount of recycled goods and the types of materials that can be recycled. Recent efforts focus on recycling food waste, the largest campus garbage producer, as well as landscape waste, demolition materials, and computer parts.
