Cruising Forward on a Green Way of Transportation Options
The Parking and Transportation Office staff work to reduce the number of cars on campus by providing the MIT community with many kinds of options to get to, from, and around campus. As a result of their efforts, the office has received several awards. These include a Pinnacle Award for Excellence in Commuter Options by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and a Go Green Award from the City of Cambridge for excellence in Commuter Programs and in recognition of outstanding efforts to promote environmentally friendly transportation.
The office manages the operation of parking, transportation, and commuter programs, including the allocation of over 4,300 parking spaces in nearly 40 locations, the annual parking permit application and distribution process, monthly subsidized MBTA passes, and nearly 1,000,000 passengers on the campus shuttles.
They also support MIT bicyclists by providing a variety of programs that encourage safe and easy bicycling around campus. Under their support, MIT bicyclists have won first place in the Mass Commute Bicycle Challenge for three years in a row. You don’t even have to own a bicycle to ride one on campus now. Current MIT employees and students can buy an annual subsidized Hubway membership.
