For MIT commuters: Flexible options, sustainable practices

The MIT Parking & Transportation Office supports and encourages a variety of options to give you the flexibility to choose each day how you would like to commute and get around campus. Our programs, anchored by the Access MIT initiative, include daily parking rates and a range of public transportation subsidies and discounts. If you want to drive today and use public transit tomorrow, that works! Take a moment to explore your options here and see how you can customize your commute to MIT.

Bicycling

If you are a benefits-eligible MIT employee commuting to your job on your own bike, MIT's Bicycle Reimbursement Program can help with expenses. If you prefer to use a bikeshare, a discounted Bluebikes membership is available through MIT. Learn more about bicycling at MIT.

Emergency Ride Home

This unique program reimburses you for the cost of a taxi or rideshare (such as Uber or Lyft) if you need a ride in the event of a personal or family emergency or if you had to work unscheduled overtime. MIT Cambridge-campus employees who use public transportation or who carpool, vanpool, bike, or walk to work at least three days per week are eligible.

Parking

You can obtain parking privileges at MIT if you are a benefits-eligible MIT employee or a graduate student or undergraduate in an upper class. Limited parking is also available for some volunteers and affiliates.

Private Transit

If you are an MIT employee who use private transit such as a private bus line or Amtrak, you may participate in the Private Transit Subsidy program, which offers reimbursement for up to 50% of your commuting costs.

Public Transit (T-passes)

If you commute via one of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) public transit options, MIT makes it easier with subsidies and discounts for monthly T-passes, subway passes, MBTA parking, and more. Students and benefits-eligible faculty and staff, including employees at Lincoln Lab, are eligible.

Ride Sharing

When you share a ride to work or school, it can save time and expenses – and it's good for the environment, too. MIT makes it easier by providing discounts on carpool parking, Zipcar memberships, and a vanpool commuting program through Enterprise.

Shuttles

A network of free shuttle services is available if you need day and/or evening rides around campus, to North Station and parts of Boston's Back Bay, or to Logan Airport, Lincoln Lab, local grocery stores, and more. The Shuttles page has the most up-to-date information about routes and schedules.

Walking

When walking is a part of your commute, you'll see the proven health benefits, and there are a variety of ways to incorporate walking into your commute or your daily workplace routine.

Finding Our Office

Many of your transit-related questions will be answered by the information and FAQ here on this site, and your Atlas account and/or the MIT parking app will help you complete transit-related tasks. If you find that you still have questions, we are here to help.

Parking & Transportation staff are available in person at the Atlas Service Center as well as via the online, email, and phone contacts provided on this site and via the Atlas website.
