Making Music in the Metaverse

Fridays, 2:000pm to 4:00pm

Instructor: Ken Zolot, with visiting guest lecturers

Students work in teams of interdisciplinary peers from Berklee College of Music, Harvard University, and MIT to develop Virtual Reality experiences.
For Fall the 2022 semester, our focus will be on making music in the metaverse, with particular attention to hardware -- haptic gloves, exoskeletons, biometric sensors, and interfaces to all human senses. The three major tracks of our semester are (1) building a working VR environment using Unity; (2) mapping the state of emerging tools and ethical considerations in an emerging new industry; and (3) interacting with visiting distinguished guests, leaders in VR/XR community, who will serve as coaches for projects. Students will have significant leeway to customize their own learning environment. Students will get access to specialized equipment and mentors.

Classes meet on Fridays, 11 sessions, starting Sep 9, 2022, ending Dec 9, 2022, no class on Sep 23, Nov 11, and Nov 25. Study/review sessions will meet Mondays at 7pm and Wednesdays at 5pm. In the absence of any bad pandemic news, all classes are in person on the MIT campus. We ask all students to pledge to attend every class, as we will forge a strong group bond, and we’ll build upon one another's work and ideas.
