Checklist Before Starting
Before embarking on this project, you will need to make sure you have the following in place:
You will need to have the content of the questionnaires finalized (in agreement
with your partner) and loaded on your web site. The current version of Cultura
is not automated and requires coordinating several applications (web site, discussion
forums, CGI scripts) that will have to be set-up on your campus by your lab
technician. (Future versions of Cultura should take care of these extra steps
by automating the set-up subroutines)
Technical aspects that need to be thoroughly investigated are:
- How will the answers from the questionnaires be received: You can set them
to send an email message directly to a specific email address and then manually
cut and paste, order them and place them on the web in the answer boxes. This
entire process can be partially automated and we suggest to discuss all options
with your support staff. In particular, familiarity with CGI scripts or database
manipulation could be an easy solution.
- If you changed content, who will be in charge of reflecting the changes in the answer sheets on the web?
- Did you create the corresponding forums reflecting the words, the situations
and the sentences that you are using? Are you, or the staff member helping
you familiar with your own campus discussion software. Can you hide the discussions
from other campus users? Can you create new discussions as needed? Can you
change the main forum link in all Cultura menus?
- Did you test with your partner to be certain that the questionnaire process
actually grabs the foreign accents. Not all servers grab the correct code
and you may have to manually correct all the answers coming to you. The same
is true of the discussion software your campus uses.
- Did you create web forms for collecting the answers? If so, we suggest that you give them a web address that you will use
again to post the answers a few weeks later. This way, the students only have to memorize one URL (suggestion: You place the web forms on the web
until the deadline, take then down, upload a temporary page while you are creating the answer pages, then load the completed Cultura site. This way, students
will never be faced with a blank page, or a wrong URL message.)
