William Green is the Hoyt C. Hottel Professor of Chemical Engineering and the Editor of the International Journal of Chemical Kinetics. He is a world leader in computer-aided chemical kinetic modeling. He leads a group of 20 researchers, and has published more than 130 articles on reaction kinetics, quantum chemistry, spectroscopy, numerical methods, and fuel chemistry. In addition to his extensive work on kinetic modeling and combustion, he has addressed a variety of industrial engineering problems involving fuels, catalysis, and emissions. Prof. Green received his BA in Chemistry (with Highest Honors) from Swarthmore College in 1983, and his PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1988. After postdoctoral research at Cambridge University and the University of Pennsylvania, he was a principal investigator at Exxon’s Corporate Research Laboratory for 6 years before joining the MIT faculty in 1997. He has received several national awards, most recently the American Chemical Society’s 2009 Glenn Award in Fuel Chemistry. He chaired the sessions on Combustion at the AIChE National Meetings for a decade, and is a member of the steering committee of the DOE’s Combustion Energy Frontier Research Center. He hosted the 7th International Conference on Chemical Kinetics at MIT in 2011. In January 2012 he was appointed Executive Officer of the MIT Department of Chemical Engineering.

Prof. Green is married to Amanda Cheetham Green, and has three sons, John, Paul, and David. He is interested in public policy issues, and was elected several times to represent his precinct in the Belmont Town Meeting. In his spare time he likes to play basketball, bicycle, and read.
