HKN Underground Guide to VI-A

Sanders

Location: Nashua, NH
Number of Respondents: 1

Sanders is located in the city of Nashua in New Hamphsire, not terribly far from Boston. The sole respondent got a great deal from his MIT fraternity and lived there over the summer. Thus, he did not have any trouble finding housing, although the company neither assisted him nor subsidized the cost. Although the company would not rent one for him, a car was essential for getting to work, which took about 45 minutes. The location did not offer many after-work activities.

The student came in contact with very few other students there, and found that there was no social interaction between students and no activities sponsored by the company. Fortunately, the environment was fairly laid-back, with flexible hours and casual dress. The student was treated with a moderate amount of respect by his highly capable co-workers, and used only fairly modern equipment.

The student worked in applied research in general electro-optics in a group of at least five people. He did not have any freedom in defining his project, which was assigned his project before the summer based on company matchings with their interests. The student was moderately happy with his project, but did not find it especially interesting, though it was fairly challenging. He did not think his project was especially important in the group, and found switching groups was discouraged.

Sanders provides neither health benefits nor dental benefits, but does pay for moving costs as well as fifth year first term tuition. The salary was below average.

The student had a fairly good overall impression of the company, and would choose it again, given the choice. He also said he would work for the company after graduation.

"They asked what interested us, then we told them, then they matched us up with an available project/area."
