Location: Cambridge, MA
Number of Respondents: 1
SatCon is located in Cambridge, and the sole respondent therefore lived in an MIT dormitory. Therefore, finding housing was easy, although the company did not help in locating housing or subsidizing the cost. A car was not necessary for getting to work. Instead, the student biked for around 10 minutes a day. The location provided ample after-work activities.
The student did not come in contact with any other students at the company. There were no social interaction between students and no company-sponsored activities. Though dress was very casual, the working environment was only moderately relaxed, and the hours not especially flexible. The student was, however, treated with respect by his competent co-workers. His workspace was a cubicle and the equipment was not especially modern.
The one respondent worked in applied research and received his assignment after several weeks, without too much freedom in defining the project. His group was small at three people, and his role was therefore quite important to the group. The student was fairly happy with his assignment, but found making deadlines challenging in such a short time frame. Switching between groups was neither encouraged nor discouraged, and was fairly easy to do.
SatCon does not provide health or dental benefits and does not pay for moving costs since the students live at MIT. However, it does pay for fifth year first term tuition. The student's second-year salary was slightly above average.
Overall, the student had a good impression of the company, and would probably choose it again, given the choice. He also would not mind working for the company after graduation.
